Edged tools like axes and knives showed up prehistorically; we just got better at choosing materials and refining shapes. Now we have steel instead of obsidian (though obsidian is sharp too!), and there are specialized shapes for every use. Saws are a more recent addition to humans cutting things, and we have a lovely selection of those as well.
