Product Details
We pride ourselves in having a wide selection of make and models to choose from at Rutabaga, but that means that we sometimes don't have specific models or colors shown on our sales floor. If you want to come and check out a specific boat on our sales floor, please call or email us in advance to set up a viewing appointment. If we don't have the exact make and model you're after on the floor, it could take 45 minutes or more to retrieve that specific boat from our warehouses.
Named after the Native Americans that inhabited Old Town, Maine, since before recorded history – and from whom we’ve gained immeasurable boat-building knowledge – the Penobscot pays homage to their superb craftsmanship, design and navigational skills. The Penobscot’s nearly plumb ends, shallow arch bottom and slight rocker have made it a sleek, nimble tripping canoe for solo or tandem paddlers. Made from three layer polyethylene, the Penobscot 164 is built to be durable and tough. Nimble and quick the Penobscot 164 can run rivers with the best of them.

Three Layer Polyethylene
Most plastic kayaks are rotationally-molded from a class of plastics called polyethylene. Each class has its own characteristics, Old Town constructs canoes and kayaks in two different methods: the single layer method, which is the more common way to mold boats, and the triple layer method, which stacks an outside layer, a middle layer that has a foaming agent in it for floatation, and a thin inside layer to seal it up. Three layer hulls are stiffer, offer built in flotation, and have a cool aesthetic. They are a bit heavier, but they're super durable. Many triple layer hulls are still around after thirty years.Gunwales
Black Vinyl
Vinyl gunwales are the most flexible option and are therefore less likely to be damaged by hard impacts. Our Outfitter Series canoes are designed for maximum durability as they need to stand up to heavy use and abuse in rental outfits and summer camps. Vinyl gunwales are also less expensive and help keep the cost of these boats low. The downside? Weight. Vinyl is heavy, and so is the SP3 material we use in the hulls. These are the heaviest boats we produce.Payment & Security
